The Single Creaky Floorboard That Only Got Worse When I Ignored It

There was one board in my hallway, right outside the bedroom door, that announced my presence every single morning. Same spot. Same low, wooden groan that seemed to echo through the whole house.

I told myself it was just part of living in an older home. Character, right?

For months I stepped around it when I remembered, or I didn’t bother when I was half-awake and stumbling toward coffee. Either way, that creak was becoming part of the soundtrack.

Then one Saturday I had the time and finally got annoyed enough to do something about it. I grabbed a pry bar from the garage, pulled up the offending floorboard, and crouched down with a flashlight to see what was going on.

What I saw wasn’t rot or termites or anything scary. It was simpler than that—and way more common.

The gap was obvious once I knew to look for it. And suddenly the noise made perfect sense.

But understanding why it creaked didn’t automatically tell me how to stop it for good.
