The Same Fence Panel Blew Out Three Times Before I Found the Real Problem

The first time the panel blew out, I figured it was a fluke. We’d had a bad storm, wind gusting over 40 mph, and one section of my fence just gave up and landed flat in the yard.

I reset it, added some extra screws, and called it done.

Three months later, the same panel was on the ground again. Different storm, same result. The seven other panels along that run? Still standing, not even loose.

By the third time, I was done assuming it was bad luck. This was panel number four in a row of eight, right in the middle of the fence line. Nothing obviously different about it—same posts, same rails, same cedar pickets as the rest.

But something was making that one section fail every time the wind kicked up, and the pattern was too consistent to ignore.

I grabbed a shovel, expecting to find a rotted post or a shallow footer that the previous owner had skimped on.

What I found instead didn’t make sense at first—but once I saw it, the whole problem clicked into place.
