The Kitchen Sink Smell That Kept Coming Back Every Three Weeks

The smell hit me every time I walked into the kitchen in the morning. Sour, organic, like something had died behind the cabinet.

I’d scrub the sink, run the disposal, pour baking soda and vinegar down the drain. For a few days, everything would smell fine.

Then three weeks later, it was back.

The cycle was weirdly consistent. I started marking it on the calendar just to see if I was imagining things. Sure enough: eighteen to twenty-one days, every single time.

I pulled everything out from under the sink. No leaks, no forgotten produce rotting in the back of the cabinet. I checked the garbage disposal for trapped food. Nothing.

The drain looked clean when I shined a flashlight down it. The P-trap wasn’t leaking. I even ran the dishwasher empty with cleaner, thinking maybe something was building up in there.

But the smell kept returning on the same schedule, which meant I was cleaning the wrong thing.

The actual problem wasn’t where I was looking.
