The Driveway That Turned Into a Pond Every Time It Rained
You know that sinking feeling when you pull up to your house and realize you’ll need to wade through six inches of water just to get the groceries inside?
That was my reality for three months straight. Every decent storm turned the end of my driveway into a shallow pond that sat there for days, mosquitoes and all.
The water wasn’t draining. Not slowly, not eventually—it just pooled in the same spot, right where the driveway met the street, like someone had built an invisible dam.
I’d check after each rain, hoping it had magically fixed itself. It hadn’t. The puddle would stretch eight feet across and refuse to budge until the sun finally evaporated it, which in spring took forever.
My neighbor suggested the driveway had settled. Another friend thought the street crew had paved over my drainage when they resurfaced last year. Both sounded plausible.
But I needed to know for sure. Standing water doesn’t just happen—something was stopping it from going where it was supposed to go.
So I grabbed a rake and started poking around the edges, looking for any clue about where the water was trying to escape.
