I started with the damper itself. With a headlamp and heavy-duty work gloves, I reached up into the firebox and manually worked the handle back and forth until it opened fully.

That’s all it took—the damper had been closed the whole time.

But here’s when you should call a professional instead. If you look up into your firebox and see thick, crusty buildup on the damper or chimney walls, don’t touch it yourself. Creosote is a fire hazard and a carcinogen—disturbing it without proper respiratory protection and tools is dangerous. A chimney sweep will inspect, clean, and make sure everything’s safe. Expect to pay $150 to $300 for a full service.

If your damper is rusted, warped, or won’t stay open, same answer: call someone.

Total cost for my “fix”: zero dollars. Time invested: thirty seconds.

To prevent it from happening again, I now check the damper before every fire. I also scheduled an annual chimney cleaning every September, which costs about $200 in my area and covers inspection, creosote removal, and peace of mind.

The smoke never came back.
