I Added R-38 Insulation to My Loft and It Stayed Ice Cold All Winter
What the Camera Showed
I turned off the lights, let the loft sit for an hour, and started scanning.
The ceiling looked fine—a smooth wash of orange and yellow, exactly what you want to see when heat is staying put. The windows showed the expected cool halo around the frames. Nothing alarming.
Then I aimed the camera at the walls.
Every single stud lit up in bright blue. Not just a little cooler—ice cold. Thin vertical columns of cold wood ran floor to ceiling, maybe sixteen inches apart, perfectly outlining the hidden framing behind the drywall.
It looked like an X-ray of the skeleton underneath.
The bays between the studs, where all that new insulation lived, glowed warm. The studs themselves were thermal highways, pulling cold straight through from the outside sheathing to the interior wall surface.
I stood there staring at the screen, watching my heating dollars bleed through a dozen frozen stripes I couldn’t even see with my naked eye.
The insulation was doing its job. The wood framing was sabotaging it.
But wood is supposed to insulate, right? That’s what I’d always assumed. So why was it acting like a refrigerator coil?
