Half My Hedge Turned Brown Overnight—and the Cause Was Right Under My Feet
The Buried Culprit
The contractor had regraded the yard to fix a pooling problem near the patio. He’d brought in new topsoil, smoothed everything out, and—apparently—laid down fabric along the hedge line to “keep the bed clean.”
I never asked him to do that. And he never mentioned it.
The split down the middle finally made sense.
But now I had a bigger problem. The fabric was buried under six inches of soil and ran the length of the hedge—maybe twenty feet. Removing it meant digging up the entire bed without damaging what roots were left.
And I had no idea if those roots were even alive anymore, or if I was already looking at dead wood that would never green up again.
I knelt down and pressed my thumb against one of the brown stems. It gave slightly—not brittle, not snapped. That was something.
Could I save it?
